Evan Schreiber (he/him) discovered West Coast Swing while living in Seattle, WA. When he moved back home to Cleveland in 2022, he looked around for WCS opportunities but couldn't find many. So, he decided to help rebuild the local community post-pandemic by teaching classes and hosting social dances under the brand name Cleveland West Coast Swing (CLE WCS). He is happy to still be growing and modeling the community after the vibrant and thriving scene he left behind in Seattle.
Evan's vision for the local community is for it to be a group that accepts dancers of different backgrounds, as well as to provide a welcoming space for dancers from historically marginalized communities. He encourages people to question the regressive ideas surrounding "traditional" dance roles (ie. men are leaders and women are followers). As someone who enjoys dancing both roles himself, he encourages people of any gender to dance either role (or even both!).
He also wants the dance to be accessible and affordable, so he hosts a regular free community dance at Forest City Brewery in Cleveland. He is grateful for the local community and recognizes that everyone plays an important part, even just by showing up to events.
SOCIAL & COMPETITIVE DANCING
While the local community is mainly social based, WCS also gives dancers an opportunity to compete in national and global competitions, often in a "Jack and Jill" style format. Competitors dance with randomly-selected partners and music to create an improvised dance. Evan teaches local classes in such a way to set up dancers for success in a social and competitive environment.
